While catching up on my reading, I came across this list of 60 quotes intended to inspire better leadership. What an awesome collection.
Here are three of my favorites and why I like them:
1. “I cannot give you a formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: Try to please everybody.” Pulitzer prize winner and U.S. journalist Herbert Bayard Swope
My reason: Leaders shouldn’t make decisions that attempt to please everyone. Rather, their decisions should attempt to do the right thing in alignment with their organization’s values, vision, and mission. How effective are you with your decision making?
2. “You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.” Co-founder Apple Inc. Steve Jobs
My reason: It’s a must for a leader to have passion. As Mr. Jobs put it, whether you have an idea, are addressing a problem, or wanting to fix something, start with passion. Look around your world. Are you passionate about everything you touch?
3. “Average leaders raise the bar on themselves; good leaders raise the bar for others; great leaders inspire others to raise their own bar.” Author Orrin Woodward
My reason: Leaders who excel at inspiring others through coaching, through their actions, and through their words will engage all those they touch. Are you a leader who inspires?
Peruse the quotes in this article, then capture three that really make you think.
Next, use the ideas to fuel changes in the way you lead, and you will have grown to be a better leader.
