Assist people on your team to strive for effective communication within the department they work and with their counterparts in other departments.You can help in these seven ways:
Strive for personal communication (in person or via telephone) instead of email or text messages.
Strive for clarity; use simple words and explain the outcomes you’re looking for.
Strive to ask better questions for understanding and engagement.
Strive to listen more than you talk; be present so you can hear what’s being said.
Strive for collaboration; you’re on the same team completing the same mission.
Strive for timeliness; bad timing on message delivery can cause a multitude of problems.
Strive for completeness in preparation; do your homework on issues of importance.
Accomplishing this requires measuring how well you’re doing followed by training, mentoring, and coaching to help your team improve, then measuring again.
Always reinforce their efforts with encouragement, appreciation, and recognition.
This isn’t not hard, but it’s critically important.
